SAMSON SAT AT THE BAR, drinking Crown Royal on the rocks. Weed was not served at this function. He had lost count, but surely he was nearing, or already in, the double digits. It didn’t matter. He hated functions like this, especially being alone. He made a decision years ago when his wife gave him a choice: his marriage or his jet. You can always get another wife, but you can’t always get another Eagle assignment. Or test assignment. He’d buried himself in his work ever since.

He slammed three Crown Royals before they left on the bus to the F-2000, and when they returned, drank several more. As he scanned the crowd, he saw David Ming and his wife standing next to his giant guard dog Li Zhong. Samson decided to tell Ming he knew what was ailing the F-2000. He wasn’t sure why. Alcohol was bad.

Samson pushed his way through the crowd toward Ming and his companions. Ming turned to him and said, “Ah, Major Samson. I hope you are enjoying our festivities. This is my—”

“I g-got something to say to you . . . Ming,” his words slurring.

He took a deep breath and poked his finger in Ming’s chest. “I know what’s wrong with your simulator, and why it doesn’t work.”
